What is candle magick?

How do you do a candle ritual?
You will find steps for exactly how to do candle magick spells later in this post. However, a candle ritual is a slightly different experience, which we will briefly discuss now.
Rituals are ceremonies that are not always for the purpose of manifestation. Rituals can mark the passing of time, like new moon and full moon rituals, used to connect to the natural cycles of the moon.
They can also be for the process of self development and spiritual growth. Rituals can be done to call in an entity like a guide, or ancestor. Lastly, to engage in a process of a transformation or healing.
One of the simplest forms of ritual for when you want to let go of a past version of you and the related story the goes with it, is as follows : Write your full name, date of birth, and the words “old me” on a small piece of paper. Light the candle and burn the paper.
While simple, this ritual can feel incredibly profound, it’s your message to the universe that you’re done with the negative influences of your past, and ready to move forward.
Set an intention (and the scene)
To preform candle magick, begin by creating a sacred space for yourself. You want to be somewhere quiet, where you won’t be interrupted. If you love crystals, having a few of your favourites around is great. Quartz is considered an amplifier and will add to the energy of any spell. Other stones you can pick based off colour (detailed below), intention, or what you feel most drawn too. Flowers to decorate your space will make the experience feel more special to you.
To get into the spiritual mood, feel free to burn incense, essential oils, or play frequency music in the background. I recommend cleansing and clearing your space if you can, with Sage, Paolo Santo, or purifying sprays.
To set your intention, begin by taking a few deep breaths. Calming your body and centering your focus. You can place your hands on your heart and clearly say out loud or in your mind your intention. If you’re a visual person, visualize your intention in your mind’s eye. Make sure to focus clearly on the intention for 1–2 minutes, breathing into it and the feelings associated with having what you want.
What are the different candle color meanings?

If your internal knowing is telling you to use a certain color for your intention, make sure to follow it, intuition doesn’t have to make sense to be correct.
Magenta, Light, or Dark Pink Candles
A pink candle is used for romance! If you want to welcome new love into your life, or deepen your connection in a relationship, a pink candle will help you do this.
Pink candles come in a few different shades, so pick the one you feel most drawn to for your spell.
Green Candle

Gold Candle

Silver Candle
Silver candles are connected to the divine feminine energy of the moon. Their cleansing power removes negative energies, and increases intuitive ability. Especially telepathy and clairvoyance.
White Candle

Can you combine candle colors?
If you feel called to combine colors go ahead. This can increase the power of your magic, depending on the intention you set and your desired result.
Creating combinations of colors with similar meanings will amplify the effect (think gold and green for money windfalls). You can also make combinations when your desire contains mixed needs.
For example, if you had an argument with your lover you can use blue for emotional healing, combined with pink to increase the feelings of love.
Whenever you’re combining different colored candles, trust your instincts. There is no danger in combining colors. Sometimes single pointed focus (using one candle) can cause the result you’re wanting faster. It all depends on your ability to concentrate on your intention.
What if you only have a white candle?

How to Perform a Candle Magick Spell
Create your spell
Decide what the focus of your spell is going to be and what elements you want to include. Dream up the steps you want involved in your spell, it can be as complicated or simple as you like. There are many spell recipes detailed by other people in books and online, however you can always craft the spell according to your intuition. This should be a fun and inspiring proccess, don’t think of it as something you can get wrong.
Choose your day
For example, for candle magick related to self love, we would pick friday or monday. You can do your spell anytime of day, however morning and evening often feel most potent.
If you’d like your spell to align with the cycles of the moon or astrology, consult a moon calendar. New moon is generally considered good for intentions and planting seeds, where as full moon is great for releasing or receiving you manifestation.
Traditionally the full moon is thought to be the best time for beauty spells!
Choose your candle
Pick the candle color that aligns with your intention and set it at the center of your altar or sacred space. Make sure it’s on a fire safe surface. You can burn the bottom of your candle to melt the wax before you place it down, so that it stands up during your ritual.
Dress the candle
You can carve words into your candle with a sharp tool, for example ‘love’ if manifesting love, or sacred symbols that you feel connected too.
Dress your candle by surrounding it with crystals, flowers, or herbs, (cinnamon, allspice, bay leafs, and clove are commonly used). If you’d like to protect the energy of your spell, circle it with a ring of salt. Clockwise for manifesting, counterclockwise for releasing.
Having a glass of water beside the candle, in the circle of salt or outside of it, will increase the energy of your magic. It can collect what’s being released in a releasing spell, or be a container for manifesting in a manifestation spell. (Don’t drink the water after a releasing spell, dispose of it either in nature, or down your sink with gratitude).
Light the candle
When you’re ready to begin, sit down, take your deep breaths and clearly set your intention. You can call on angels, guides or your higher self to aid in the process.
You may want to write down your intention to offer to the flame. Speak your desires outloud, or in you mind 3 times. Visualize or feel yourself receiving them.
Than light the candle. Watch as your candle burns. If you have a small piece of paper with your intention on it, safely offer it to the flame, burn it fully.
Interpret the flame
As you watch the candle burning you can sit in meditation of the flame. Let it inspire you and write down any thoughts, messages or ideas that come to mind.
Here are some ways to interpret your candle’s flame
- Flickering flame: Your spell is full of power
- High flame: Your wish will happen quickly
- Weak flame: There are obstacles to overcome first
- Blue flame: Helpful forces, like angels, are present
- Split flame: A new entity, like an ancestor’s soul, is present
- Crackling flame: A spirit guide, wants to speak to you. Pay close attention.
- No flame: Try your spell at another time.
- Curled wick: Your candle spell worked perfectly
- Quick burning wick: You’ll enjoy a quick, short-lived result.
- Slow burning wick: Your amazing outcome will take time, a slow burn
It’s ideal to let your candle burn all the way out on it’s own. However make sure you’re considering fire safe practices if you do this, don’t leave it unattended. All the supplies for your spell can be cleansed (such as crystals), or returned to the earth (the water, salt and herbs).
