Recently I was inspired to finish the major arcana tarot card meanings on my website. Honestly, it feels silly! If you want to know what a card means, Google’s AI will give you a quick, easy to digest answer. Almost everyone now uses ChatGPT for the questions on their mind.
So how do you navigate using spiritual tools like tarot in the world of AI? Let me tell you a story.
A few months ago I had an experience that hurt me deeply. It made me insecure as hell!
A dear friend of mine messaged me for a reading. That day I was at an emotionally low point. I had fought with my husband. I was spending the night looking after my 3-month-old baby alone. Lacking sleep and support. I struggled to find the time and energy to do my friend’s reading. He wanted insight into an upcoming public speaking event he had. I know nothing about public speaking.
When I did his reading and shared the meaning of the cards, he felt it was difficult to understand. So he took the cards we drew and ran them through ChatGPT.
When I saw the answer, I felt embarrassed and frustrated. Growing up shy and introverted, I have always struggled with communication. I knew what the cards were saying, but my delivery wasn’t perfect. Well, ChatGPT, an AI built for conversation, communicated perfectly.
In seconds, it generated a meaning close to what I was trying to say. At that moment I fell short. My friend made a joke about how AI wasn’t going to replace me. People who use AI would. I faked a laugh and some bravado, then went and cried. Questioning if I was worth anything as a tarot reader.
The truth is AI can give you a perfectly clear answer for your tarot card questions. It can give you a neat little meaning that’s easy to understand and feels good to read. What it can’t do is challenge you. It can’t give you something that requires you to think deeply, and to actually take into your life.
Tarot is a tool of reflection and intuition, not just the reader’s intuition, yours too! Most people need other people’s perspectives. Because we are too deep in our own mind and our own life to see clearly.
Easy insight gives you nothing. It doesn’t move you forward. It doesn’t give you truth. You can’t hold on to it, and it will slip from your mind as quickly as it’s generated. It’s like popcorn, lacking any nutrients. It will fill you up, but are you nourished?
What a tarot reader gives you is something real, juicy. It might be messy and imperfect. It’s exactly what you need, to know that you’ll find your way.
By all means if you’re drawn to using these AI tools, do it. It isn’t bad or wrong to go to AI for a tarot reading. While it offers comfort and coherence, you run the risk of missing out on valuable information. Insight that doesn’t come strictly from traditional meanings. Instead, from true understanding and lived experience with the cards.
Plus AI takes the magic out of it, what’s the fun in that?!
If you never want to pay for a tarot reading in your life, you can learn the cards yourself. Tune into your inner knowing and work with the uncertainty of figuring it out. Because it’s far more powerful than a generated answer.
